Chapter 1: Guest

            I rounded the corner in the lavish Seattle hospital, Ballard Community Emergency room had called me in when a car collided with a drunk driver. Killing one child and harming two others along with the nice woman driving them home from a tiny vacation away from the community the orphaned teenagers lived. Their concern was not for the Social Worker, or the other surviving child. It was for the girl who was slipping into a coma. I made it to her room as a male nurse was leaving, handing me her chart.
            "What is the diagnosis?" I said as his feet faultered when his eyes met mine, clearly because I looked so different than him. Maybe even dead.
            "H- er.. Her name is Hana. She's sixteen and both her parents died when she was two years old so she's been in the system her whole life. Her kidneys decided to fail because of the accident and we found in her belongings a perscription for Amantadine, cold medication." He said as if I didn't know what the drug was. "And due to the failure she's going into overdose." His eyes scanned mine as he said it and I looked over her chart for a split second, catching all the words on the paper before looking back up at him. His eyes looked deep and saddened.
            "She'd suffered from tachycardia resulting in v-fib?" I asked him, just to engage a few more words out of him, like a normal human doctor would. But I knew his answer would be that she was on her was to hepatic failure. She was dying.
            "Yes, sir. It seems her liver is on the verge of failure, there is nothing we can do." He looked away for a second and I sighed, another normal reaction for a human. "It's so sad, because she probubly will never have a funeral." He added as he walked away, remembering he had alot of other patients to attend to.
            I placed her chart on the nail in the door and let it swing open a little further to make a sound and announce my presence. She was a slender, tall and battered girl under the cold blue blanket draped over her body. She slowely looked up at me with her light brown eyes and gasped for hair as if moving them hurt her. They bore into mine and I blinked for a second, not really understanding why I had the urge to blink because I never really had the urge to do anything. I forced myself to 'breath' and blink like a human but I never did it unvoluntarily. This took me off gaurd and she smiled at me, a tiny peice of her light brown hair fell in her face and she barely noticed. All I saw was the face of my wife in her's. The same tiny eyes, and big waves in her matted hair. The same small nose and bird lips.
            "Hello Hana." I said as if I had said her name for three hundred years. "My name is Carlisle, and I will be taking care of you."
            She tried to raise her hand to shake mine, even though I didn't have my hand held out. To ease her weakness I reached out to catch her fingers in mine. I could feel the blood under her skin, sluggish and weak, dark circles under her eyes made her look more dead than alive. And her pale fading skin look more vampire than human.
            "You would be the first." She added, trying to put a smirk at the tiny inkling in her truth. "No one seems to beable to give me.." She paused and closed her lids to catch her breath and I could just barely see threw them in there opacity-- "a right answer." She breathed again and opened them to look straight into my eyes as if to pull the answer from me. "I want to know whats going on." She yearned now with a tiny wine in her soft voice. I sat at the edge of her bed and pursed my lips.
            "Have you been listening to what the doctors have been telling you?" I asked and she searched her brain for the answer.
            "I don't understand all the code words." She faintly shook her head and licked her bottom lip. Everything about this girl was sluggish, her reactions, her labored breathing, how slow she blinked, and shook her head. It pained me to watch her die, if not for the Cardiopulmonary bypass machine holding her life here. It was only buying her time.
            "Dear, the medicine you have been taking cant be filtered by your kidneys and we cant get it out. So you are overdosing." I struggled for the simplist words to ease her brain from thinking because soon it would know she had the worst coming straight for her. "You had a very minor heart attack but it was enough to stop your liver from working too."
            "I don't have a family." She stated, her eyes wet. "I've never had anyone. I just waited for someone to take me in and call me their little girl. I'm dying aren't I?" She gasped for air because she used all of it to let those words spill from her lungs. "I will never have a family, will I?"
            I wanted to hold her, console her. But a man who is supposed to cure her of her illness and send her on her way could do no such thing. Not even a cold, dead and lifeless man with a family and children waiting for him to come home. Alice was right, I would fall in-love with another girl. But it wouldn't destory Esme. It would uplift her.
