Chapter 6: The Dog
Emmett and Jasper ran back with me towards the direction of the house after we ate a few more helpless animals. Emmett stopped and Jasper had to double back to see what was the matter. "It's nothing, I just wanted to let Hana lead." He said to our concerned faces. "See if you can smell the house..." I lifted my nose and tried to circle my mind around all the different sounds and smells. I could smell our old trail that we had taken earlier in the day to get here but it was starting to wash away because of the light rainfall. A few sprinkles hit my face and I barely noticed the dampness.
"Why are we letting her do this, she could catch the smell of a few humans and kill them before we can react." Jasper said and I noticed his uneasy tone.
"She stopped herself from harming Nessie, I would assume she isn't as savage as we think she is. Carlisle might have stumbled on a new way of making vampires without the vicious side effects..." He trailed off and I got fed up with their conversation and decided the direction they were headed in the first place was the correct one to take. As I took off they followed just behind me. My anger started to boil and I didn't know where it was coming from as I pushed myself to run faster, running into a few trees but fixing them as soon as I was through.
I could hear Emmett quite a ways behind me let out a booming laugh that shook the ground below my feet and as we got closer and closer to the house I decided to dodge the trees instead of just barrel through them. The crack of thunder I made as I broke them was a little too suspicious this close to town in such light rain. Something stung my nose and I couldn't feel my anger anymore as I got further and further from Jasper and Emmett, maybe that's what Emmett was talking about earlier, 'mood control'? Jasper was making me angry. Emmett was right, that was a dumb power. I let myself laugh and blinked but stopped. That second the smell was stifling and had to stop breathing. I looked around and it was a small clearing but through the trees I heard a deep growl.
I saw a large russet wolf step out from the brush, his eyes jet black and almost twice as tall as me. I took a step back and he lunged forward and bit into my shoulder. I was shocked because I felt the pain, how ? I screamed and saw Jasper stand at the line where I realised the smell got muggy. Was there an invisible line I had crossed? When I turned to run towards him he was gone and I screamed again but the dog tried to bite my face so I grabbed his jaw in my fingers and tried to pull it apart. He wimpered and staggered back but shook it off and tried to jump at me again--
"Jacob, NO!" Renesmee screamed as she ran into him and as if she was stronger than him he stopped before she fell on her butt. She threw a pair of shorts at him and I held my shoulder though it did not bleed. "Got put some clothes on, you have some explaining to do." She said and the animal carfully grabbed the small clothes in his jaw and glared at me as he hid behind a tree and dissapeared. A few seconds later a tall lengthy boy came from the woods, wearing the shorts she provided. His entire body was a deep tan and long black hair hid his face. "Where have you been?"
"You answer me first, who is she and why are you protecting her!" Jacob screamed, more at me then Nessie and grabbed his sore jaw.
"She is my aunt, my new best friend! She didn't know she was tresspassing, now go!" She screeched in a dainty voice at him. It was cute to watch, a tall native man cowering at the words of this teenage girl. "Go back to hiding from me," She added and pushed him by his chest but he just pulled her up in a hug and then dissapeared into the forest.
"I'm sorry," I started to say and she didn't look me in the eyes but walked past me back to the opposite side of the trees.
"It's ok, Alice sent me to meet you two here, everyone already knows what you can do because she saw you rip him apart and put him back together." She explained and we started to run through the forest, more like I was following her this time.
"Emmett and Jasper--" I whispered and she shook her head.
"They tried to catch you but you were too fast, though that is Jasper's fault for pushing your anger. Just remember that they will never abandon you. They know where the line is and did not want to cross and risk leaving Rose or Alice heartbroken. But it wouldn't have mattered, Jacob would not have hurt them." She looked at me as we slowed to a walk and came to the front lawn. "But it's best to always be safe, it could have been Sam and his gang. They would have been so kind to pause and talk about it before attacking."
"Girls, in the house." I heard Edward say and we ducked in the open door. "It was very foolish of Jasper to do, I am so very sorry. But please know that none of us are mad at you." He added and gestured for me to sit.
"I didn't know," I said and he put his finger to his lips to silence me.
"I know, we just need to have the talk now, rather than later." Edward looked to Carlisle as he stepped forward.
"A few things, firstly that you cannot go anywhere near La Push. The Quilliette and I have had an agreement we do not cross paths, though Jacob and his group can come as close to the house as they please." He said and I listened intently. "Secondly, you have to act more human when you start school. Shift in your seat every so often, blink three times a minute, itch yourself randomly, cross your legs... everything you can remember yourself doing when you were human."
"Except for your funeral, not many will come but i do suppose a few from your foster home will show up to show they miss you." Edward added.
"I have to lay in a casket and fake like I am dead?" I gasped and Carlisle smiled.
"You don't really have to fake it, not doing anything comes naturally to us. Though after a few days of just you and your thoughts can get a little boring..." He murmered to himself and Edward glanced at him.
"Don't eat humans, though you already know that." Edward thought and then smiled. "That's it for the rules, but now here are a few other things to be aware of..."
"Do not go outside unless you are certain no one is within miles in every direction of seeing you in the sun." Carlisle stated and I noticed the rain stopped and a small band of light shot through the large wall of windows and danced along our skin. It shined like diamonds and let a small smile crack on my stone face. "Never show anyone or tell them what you are. That will put our entire life-style here in danger. And you wouldn't want that."
"Do not show anyone, Hana." Edward repeated and I looked up at him
"Who am I to tell? I do not know anyone." I said and glanced back down at my skin, but the sun was gone, covered by a little angry cloud.
"Do not use your speed or strength in the presence of a human--"
"And your power..." Edward cut him off and Carlisle nodded in agreement. "If you were human and saw any of this would you react so calmly?"
"Probubly not..." I sighed and remembered the fuzzy memory of Carlisle holding the large needle to my chest.
"Do you regret the choice you made?" Edward's head cocked and I had forgotten he could read my mind.
"I didn't have a choice..." I murmured and he shook his head.
"Your head was screaming that you wanted to live."
"Am I alive?" I pointed out and he shut his mouth.
"I think that is enough for today..." Carlisle stated and left the room as Edward followed.
"I'm not mad at you..." Renesmee smiled and hugged me as she stood. I held my breath because I could feel her warm blood under her skin and didn't want to attack her when she was this close. As she pulled away to follow her father and grandfather I saw Edward standing in the doorway with his arms crossed and smile across his face. He heard how dedicated I was to not hurting his family and was pleased.
